Rate Adaptation for Buffer Underflow Avoidance in Multimedia Signal Streaming

چکیده
In media transmission over packet networks, one of the most challenging issues is the avoidance of receiver buffer underflows. Among the approaches proposed to solve this problem, the source rate adaptation is promising, due to the availability of multi-rate encoders. In order to succeed, rate-adaptive approaches should take into account not only the network throughput, but also the playout buffer fullness. Using this information, it is possible to determine at which rate the source should encode the stream, in order to avoid underflows. In this paper, we derive and analyze the expression of the underflow probability; we show that it can be written in closed form as a function of the source rate, the receiver buffer fullness and the channel statistics. In particular, we study the dependency on the media rate, and we show how to achieve infinitesimal underflow probabilities even in presence of a high channel variance. Furthermore, we specialize this formulation for a CBR channel. In case of channel variations during the playout, the buffered data may not suffice to ensure zero underflow probability; based on the previous formulation, we present an algorithm to recompute the source rate that allows continuous media playout. This algorithm can be safely iterated at every channel throughput change, and proved to be effective in avoiding buffer underflows.

mDASH: A Markov Decision-Based Rate Adaptation Approach for Dynamic HTTP Streaming
Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) has recently been widely deployed in the Internet. It, however, does not impose any adaptation logic for selecting the quality of video fragments requested by clients. In this paper, we propose a novel Markov decision-based rate adaptation scheme for DASH aiming to maximize the quality of user experience under time-varying channel conditions. To this ...

Multimedia streaming applications are traditionally delivered over UDP. Recent measurements show that more and more multimedia streaming data are over TCP as web-based TV, P2P streaming, video sharing websites are getting increasingly popular. To improve the Quality of Experience (QoE) for users and to cope with variability in TCP throughput, streaming applications typically implement buffers. ...

متن کاملAdaptive video streaming over HTTP through 4G wireless networks based on buffer analysis
One of the main challenges in video transmission is understanding and adapting to the varying network bandwidth. The traditional approach of bandwidth estimation is not accurate as there are many factors like congestion that can delay the arrival rate of the ping packet which may lead to a misconception that the bandwidth was low. Thus, the better approach to this problem will be to estimate th...

The demand for multimedia services is increasing rapidly in the last years. Therefore, efficient video compression has become a very important research for the multimedia communication. H.264 is the state-of-the-art digital video coding recommendation, which is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 Advanced Video Coding (H.264/AVC) (ITU-T, 2003). The standard is a joint collaborative effort between the IS...
